SCAFFOLD USER HAZARD AWARENESS TRAINING (UHT)
The Scaffold User Hazard Awareness Program is designed to help the scaffold user recognize the hazards on various types of scaffold. It is approximately 3 hours in length and incorporates a Power Point/slide presentation that encourages student participation. This course is not designed for workers that do any type of actual erecting. |
 |
PRIMARY ACCESS TRAINING (PAT)
The Primary Access Training course is intended for workers who erect various scaffold types that do not exceed the height to base ratio, usually either 4 to 1 or 3 to 1. The course is in the form of a manual sent out two weeks in advance (for each section) in which students are required to study the contents and answer the self test questions prior to attending a one day session. The one day session will include a review of the manual, instructor demonstrations, practice by the students in erecting and dismantling of a scaffold. Students are evaluated by a written exam as well as erecting and dismantling a scaffold. The pass mark is 70%. |
 |
PROFESSIONAL SCAFFOLDER TRAINING (PST)
Scaffolders who continually work in the industry erecting and dismantling scaffolds of various types, regardless of height or configuration, will take one or more of the various courses. There are three levels of training: Level 1, Level 2, and Speciality Level. |

Below please find several web site links that can assist you in obtaining the materials you need.
www.osha.gov
This web site offers free downloads of the OSHA standards 1926.450 – 1926.454 that govern the proper erection, inspection and use of all scaffold products.
www.scaffold.org
The Scaffold Industry Association (SIA) is a non-profit organization that offers many written, VHS and CD ROM products for purchase created by industry professionals to assist all erectors and users of scaffold. In addition, this organization lists over 60 Accredited Training Institutes throughout the United States and Canada where you can go to receive hands on training for User Hazard Awareness, Competent Person or Professional Scaffold Erecting.
www.nsc.org
The National Safety Council web site offers you the ability to purchase the ANSI A10.8-2001 Safety Requirements for Scaffolding. This set of scaffold standards offers guidelines written by industry professionals to assist you in erecting, inspecting and using scaffold safely.
www.ssfi.org
The Scaffold, Shoring and Forming Institute has co-authored with the SIA a “Code of Safe Practices” that can be downloaded free of charge to assist you by providing some common sense guidelines for erecting and using scaffold. Many scaffold manufacturers like Action Scaffold use these Codes of Safe Practices as our Manufacturer’s Recommendations on how to use scaffold equipment properly. A copy of the Code of Safe Practices is sent with our packing list with each order. The codes should be read and posted for reference when using scaffold.

Using scaffold towers as part of your home improvement construction project means that for your safety it is a good idea to be aware of the health and safety recommendations. Treat your home as a workplace when using scaffold towers. Before you undertake work on scaffolding towers carry out an assessment in accordance to The Work at Height Regulations. In the workplace this assessment is to confirm that there is no alternative to working at height and that the most suitable equipment has been selected for the job in hand, the same should apply to your home construction project.
Scaffold towers are, when used correctly, a safe means of gaining access to work which is being done at height. They are used widely throughout the US. Where incidents can occur is when there has been inappropriate erection or the misuse of the scaffold towers, also known as access towers. Numerous accidents occur because of these reasons but with the correct health and safety practices these are being lowered and can be prevented.
When erecting scaffold towers you need to be aware that aluminium and the thin-wall steel towers are relatively light and can overturn easily with incorrect use. All parts must be in their correct place to ensure the required core strength. If sections are left out there is a good chance that the towers can collapse.
There are two approved methods which are recommended by the Prefabricated Access Suppliers and Manufacturers Association, which have been developed in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive. However all manufacturers also have the duty to provide the instruction manual which explains the erection sequence and this should include any bracing requirements. The same applies to any organisations which hire the towers to you.
The first approved method is an advance guard rail system, which makes use of guard rail units which are specifically designed for the job. These guard rail units are locked in place form the level below and moved up onto the platform level. They provide collective fall prevention and are put in place before the operator accesses the platform in order to fit the permanent guard rails. It is the progressive erection of guard rails from the protected areas at the lower level which makes sure that the operator will not be exposed to the risk of falling from an un-guarded platform.
The second approved method of erection is the andldquo;through the trapandrdquo; method. It involves the operator taking up a working position in the trap door of the platform. From this position you can add or remove the components which are acting as guard rails on the level above the platform. This method is designed to make sure that the operator does not stand on an un-guarded platform, yet can install the components to a particular level while you are positioned within the trap door of that level.
Before use the scaffolding towers you should inspect the access towers well to see that they are in a safe working condition. Naturally you or any other person using the scaffold towers should not be under the influence of any state altering medication or other substances.
Take the time to plan your work well as this will help you keep safe when using scaffold towers.

Scaffolding is a temporary structure used to support people and material in the construction or repair of buildings and other large structures. It is usually a modular system of metal pipes or tubes, although it can be made out of other materials. Bamboo is still used in some Asian countries like the People’s Republic of China.
There are several parts to scaffolding. There are the tubes, boards, hoop irons (nail plate), couplers or fittings, base plates, ladders, ropes, anchor ties, reveal ties, gin wheels, sheeting, etc.
The key elements of a scaffold are standards, ledgers and transoms. The standards, also called uprights, are the vertical tubes that transfer the entire mass of the structure to the ground where they rest on a square base plate to spread the load. The base plate has a shank in its center to hold the tube and is sometimes pinned to a sole board. Ledgers are horizontal tubes which connect between the standards. Transoms rest upon the ledgers at right angles. Main transoms are placed next to the standards, they hold the standards in place and provide support for boards; intermediate transoms are those placed between the main transoms to provide extra support for boards.
Good foundations are esstenial. Often scaffold frameworks will require more than simple base plates to safely carry and spread the load. Scaffolding can be used without base plates on concrete or similar hard surfaces, however base plates are always recommended.
The purpose of a working scaffold is to provide a safe place of work with safe access suitable for the work being done.
